Area Patrols
Area patrols are initiated by a road patrol member when visiting a specific township, village, hamlet or area of Steuben County. This patrol is completed after a minimum of 20 minutes in the general community area.
-
Intensified Traffic Posts
Intensified Traffic Posts (ITPs) are initiated as the result of specific citizen complaints of specific traffic problems. Often these complaints involve speeding or other moving violations in a residential area.
-
Seatbelt Enforcement
The Sheriff schedules road checks and patrols on seatbelt enforcement with grants from Traffic Safety on Seatbelt Enforcement.
-
Stop Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) Programs
Stop DWI patrols are scheduled within an area of Steuben County. Generally, these patrols are intensified where the crimes of DWI or DWI accidents occur most frequently. Areas are identified by the sheriff’s office STOP DWI coordinator or previous patrols and are scheduled through the office of the Undersheriff.

Suspicious Activity Patrols
Suspicious Activity Patrols (SAPs) are initiated upon report of suspected criminal activity. SAPs may be reported by citizens, confidential informants, other police agencies, or any member of the Sheriffs Office. Similar to ITPs, SAPs will result in specific, police response from road patrol personnel. Upon receipt, Dispatch will be advised and a CR number assigned.
